A lot was accomplished this weekend. The kitchen cabinets are almost completely installed. The woodwork is finished and installation begins Tuesday morning.

Riesling Wine is King in the Finger Lakes

Riesling is is a very popular wine in the United States. It is food-friendly and affordable and is a diverse wine in that it can be bone dry or a sweet dessert variety. Riesling is also king in the Finger Lakes. Often called a noble grape, it is the Finger Lakes’ most widely planted Vinifera variety. There are almost 1000 acres in production and almost all wineries offer at least one Riesling. The slate soils and micro-climate created by the glacial-formed lakes are said to what makes Riesling thrive here. Finger Lakes wineries continue to be internationally recognized for their award-winning Rieslings and the variety has received many awards in many wine publications, including the Wine Spectator.

Our Seneca Lake Bed and Breakfast is Expanding

Finally, Sunrise Landing Bed and Breakfast on Seneca Lake is on its way to having another beautiful suite. The wall board is completed, the ceilings are painted and we are picking out wall colors. Just like our Sunflower apartment suite, the new one will have a full kitchen, private entrance, and a beautiful view of the lake. It will also boast a luxurious bathroom with a corner garden tub and a separate tile and glass shower. If we could just decide on a name, the color selections might be easier. Presently we have the Rose, Morning Glory, and our Sunflower. The name for our new addition seems to be a toss-up between the "Forget-me-not" and the "Iris" The "Lilac Suite" is a close third. They are all beautiful flowers and have romantic connotations - making the decision difficult. At this point, input from others, especially from our past guests or future guests would be most welcome. In fact, it might help to get the project moving again. We are hoping to complete the project by the middle to end of June.

Seneca Lake Wine Trail Announces 2012 Events

The first of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail events is under way. The Bargain Bash, taking place in participating wineries from Saturday, January 7 to Monday, January 16, is a bit unlike the other events in that it doesn't require a ticket. But, this first event signals that the season is starting off in high gear. This week-long event is like a giant wine-trail garage sale. Participating wineries use this opportunity to clean out their inventory and they drop prices on select items including wine, wine glasses, clothing, gift items, and more. Anyone on the mailing list should have received a postcard

This is a favorite recipe at Sunrise Landing Bed and Breakfast. Originally I found it on-line at MyRecipes.com. While I usually tinker with recipes and make them my own creation, this one has required very little tinkering. I do change the filling, at times, in order to make it a vegetarian recipe, and there are any number of varieties one can create. One can also substitute evaporated whole milk for the half and half. The following is very close to the recipe which can be found on MyRecipes.com .

1 1/2 - 2 cups diced, cooked ham
1/2 cup chopped, green onion
8 - 10 flour tortillas (8 inch works best)
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
6 large eggs
2 cups half and half
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (I leave this out)

1. Warm tortillas according to directions in microwave or fry pan. Sprinkle ham and chopped onion (or other vegetables) evenly down the center of each tortilla and top with grated cheese. Roll up the tortilla, and place seam side down in 13 X 9 baking dish which has been lightly greased or sprayed with cooking spray.
2. Whisk together eggs and next three ingredients in a large bowl. Pour mixture evenly over tortillas.
3. Cover and chill at least 8 hours. Remove from refrigerator, and let stand 30 minutes at room temperature before baking.
4. Bake, covered, at 350 for 20 minutes; uncover and bake 15 minute. Sprinkle with remaining 3/4 cup cheese. Bake about 5 minutes more or until cheese is melted. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.

At Sunrise Landing we serve these enchiladas with oven roasted hash browns, corn chips, salsa and sour cream. We garnish with a fresh tomato slice, when they are in season.

Late Winery Owner, Debra Whiting to be Remembered at Wine Festival

She was an amazing chef, known throughout the Finger Lakes - and beyond - for her imaginative menus and creative culinary skill, and she was a warm and friendly neighbor to those of us who call this beautiful Seneca Lake area our home. Debra Whiting, co-owner of Red Newt Winery and Bistro, has been called an ambassador of the food and wine of the Finger Lakes Region and she was a huge supporter of the Finger Lakes Wine Festival. It is in large part due to her hard work that the festival has grown in size and stature making this coming weekend, a perfect time to honor her at the festival at the Watkins Glen International Race Track. There will be two opportunities for festival goers to pay tribute to the memory of Deb Whiting. The first will be to raise a glass during a special toast in her honor, prior to the blessing of the festival during the Yancey's Fancy Launch of the Lakes. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to watch a beautiful pictorial presentation of her life - on display on the second floor of the media center on both Saturday and Sunday.

Attendees are invited to don their best togas for the Yancy's Fancy Cheese Launch of the Lakes, which will commence at 6 PM on Friday. It is said to be the best way to get into the Wine Festival sampling spirit. Yancey's Fancy will offer sampling of their world-famous cheese, and wine from several wineries will be on sale. There will also be concessions , live music, and fireworks - all for only $15. The two tasters with the best togas will be blessed by Bacchus, the god of wine, and crowned King and Queen of the 2011 festival. They will receive crystal champagne flutes from the Vee Collection compliments of Steuben Glass. In addition, they will receive free admission to the 2012 festival. Proceeds of the ticket sales for Launch of the Lakes will be donated to the Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty in Debra Whiting's memory.

This year marks the fifteenth Annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival - when the Watkins Glen International Raceway transforms into a huge Finger Lakes Wine tasting room. This year, over 600 New York Wines will be sampled. On Saturday and Sunday - in addition to wine, the festival will feature food, arts and crafts from across the state, culinary classes, cooking demonstrations, wine seminars and more. Phish in Watkins Glen, NY

Phish - the American rock band noted for its originality and the exploration of music across genres is in Watkins Glen for a three day, July 4th weekend celebration. The band is noted for music which blends elements of jazz, alternative rock progressive rock, hard rock, funk, folk, bluegrass, and more.
Many local residents are excited about the concert for even more than the music. This is because Phish will urge fans to join and contribute to the Coalition to Protect New York - a grassroots organization opposed to hydrofracking, a natural gas drilling method feared by many New Yorkers because of its potential to contaminate water.
The controversial drilling method has not been permitted in New York but the moratorium expires in July and thus it could be permitted as early as this summer. Hydrofracking involves using high volumes of water and chemicals to extract the gas from the Marcellus Shale which runs through the southern tier and north into the Finger Lakes region.
Coalition volunteers will give out handouts and flyers at the concert.
Local anti-fracking filmmaker Jeff Andrysick and his wife, Jodi, from Steuben County, will donate 150 copies of their latest movie, "Water Isn't Water Anymore" to the coalition for the concert.
Phish fans are traditionally committed to social issues and environmental responsibility. Many believe that the concert will be an opportunity for more people to learn about the dangers of fracking and what opponents are doing to prevent it from overwhelming our state.

So Much to Do in the Finger Lakes - Don't Forget Corning

When guests stay at Sunrise Landing on beautiful Seneca Lake for just two or three days - there is so much to do locally, that they rarely have time to venture beyond the immediate area. But for longer stays - I always suggest a trip to Corning as it is only a 45 minute ride.

Famed Market Street beckons with many boutique shopping establishments, and restaurants for intimate dining for lunch or dinner. But, of course, Corning is most known for the Corning Museum of Glass where they can see live glass blowing demonstrations as well as explore 35 centuries of glass art, history, and science. Visitors can even make their own glass souvenir to take home.

But, did you know that the Corning Museum of Glass, as wonderful as it is, is not the only exciting museum in town? When in Corning, one can also visit what is sometimes called, "The Best of the West, in the East" - the Rockwell Museum. This exciting museum changes its exhibits several times a year and rotates its large permanent collection of western art through galleries of various themes, such as: Wilderness, Buffalo, Indian and Cowboy, and Horses.

Not only have they synced their hours but one can save money by visiting both museums in the same day. You can purchase tickets for both at either museum. Kids and teens, 19 and under can visit both, absolutely free. Both Museums have extended their summer hours and are open 9 AM - to 8 PM. Fun in the Finger Lakes - The Keuka Outlet Trail

The warmer weather and April showers today, holds the promise of spring's arrival. The green daffodil shoots peeking up in the garden second the motion. And with spring's arrival, many of our guests will be looking for outdoor activities such as hiking. Whether biking or hiking (and even cross-country skiing in the winter), the Keuka Outlet Trail is one of the best spots. This strip of land from Seneca Lake to Keuka Lake is also full of history.

In about mid-nineteenth century, two bodies of water connected the almost 300 foot drop between Seneca and Keuka Lakes. They were the waterway to power mills and the canal for boat traffic. The flow of water to both were controlled by a dam and guardhouse in Penn Yan. The outlet still carries water from one lake to the next. It was formed by a ground fault in the Tully limestone which allowed the water to run between the two lakes. When hiking or biking the trail, you'll see remnants of the many mills that benefited from the water power. There were gristmills (flour), lumber mills, tool shops, distilleries. By 1835 there were 30 to 40 mills consisting of tanneries, forges, weavers for cotton and wool cloth, and more. But, though the years manufacturing in the area declined, and the last water-turbine mill closed in 1968.

The trail was also formerly a tow-path and later a railroad was built eventually becoming part of the New York Central System. It was called the Corkscrew Railway because of its twists and turns. It operated until 1972, when the tracks were washed out by a flood from Hurricane Agnes.

Citizens convinced the town of Penn Yan to buy the property in 1981 and it has been developed and maintained since by a group called Friends of the Outlet. The lovely scenery as well as the history make it a wonderful place to hike or bike. It is 7.5 miles long, and partially paved. Trail signs and outhouses were added recently along the route. It is free and open to the public.

Sunrise Landing innkeepers recently returned from the Mid-Atlantic Inkeepers Trade Show and Conference held this year in Lancaster, Pa. We are sometimes asked the question, “What can you learn at a B&B conference that you haven’t already learned after years of innkeeping?" On the contrary, it was clear from start to at the conference a few weeks ago that innkeeping just isn’t what it used to be.

Our rapidly evolving industry includes everything from changes in guest demographics affecting decorating, and other trends, to the obvious technological transformations taking place all around us.

Meyer and McGuire to Perform at Ventosa Vineyards on Seneca Lake

On Saturday, February 19, 2011, Meyer and McGuire from Canandaigua, will perform at Cafe Toscana at Ventosa Vineyards from 3-6 PM. They are known for a variety of genres such as classic folk, country, rock, bluegrass, blues, Irish, Caribbean, as well as original tunes. Some of their songs are for listening but most invite audience participation. Their performances are said to generate an unpretentious warmth that will open the heart and soul. Wine tastings will be complementary during the show, and beer will be for sale. The Cafe will extend its hours for the show. The event is free and open to the public. It sounds like a great way to get together with friends and do something inexpensive and fun.

Sunrise Landing is again this season partnering with Finger Lakes Wine Country and offering a special cooperative package. Stay two nights in one of our beautiful suites, at the winter discounted rates ($20 off each night), and your third night is 50% off the regular rate. You will receive a Finger Lakes Wine Country Passport with discounts to wineries, restaurants and other area attractions and a 1/2 pound box of gourmet, homemade chocolates from the Seneca Lake General Store.

Sunrise Landing has been closed for six weeks and is opening for weekends in February (extended weekends by special request).

VALENTINE SPECIAL - AVAILABLE ALL WEEKENDS IN FEBRUARY:

This special includes two nights in one of our beautiful suites, a delicious antipasto plate with crusty French Bread the night you arrive (can be your dinner or, if you prefer, a hearty appetizer before you dine out), a 1/2 lb. box of delicious homemade chocolates from the Seneca Lake General Store in Watkins Glen, two full breakfasts, delicious homemade cookies each afternoon, a wine tasting at six Seneca Lake Wineries, and a $50 gift certificate towards dinner at Glenora Winery's Veraisin's Restaurant a few minutes away, or at the Red Newt Bistro on the other side of the lake.

1) You can only stay with us for one night - make your reservation before the end of February - for any available date until the end of April - and we will take $15 off your stay.

Seneca Lake Wine Trail 2011 Events Announced

The Seneca Lake Wine Trail organization manages many fun events throughout the year involving the majority of their winery members. The first, taking place this weekend (for which we do not have availability) is the Pasta and Wine weekend. For the remaining events February through December, we have several great lodging options available, here at Sunrise Landing. The next exciting event - coming up, after this weekend, is the Chocolate and Wine Weekend February 11 - 13. If you have attended the fun Chocolate and Wine Weekend before, you know that chocolate and wine is not limited to dessert options. At the Chocolate and Wine event, the participating wineries each creatively prepare a dish for visitors to enjoy with several of their wines, and the possibilities are endless. I recall at one event I attended, a fabulous Chili with dark chocolate included in the recipe - which was absolutely "to die for". Participants do receive the recipes and can later create any of them at home.
